The original word for reading bullets is kiai yoke. yoke simply means "dodging." Kiai is the warrior spirit you hear about in Japanese arts, martial or otherwise ... Go (the board game) thinks kiai is pretty important. And obviously the Danmaku set. It represents a unity of purpose, when the mind, body, and spirit are united towards a common goal, a state of perfect focus. Yes, Flandre tells a joke very much like the one I tell. It's not as forced but it's just as bad.

I could translate it in a number of ways. Spirited dodging, vigorous dodging, instinctive dodging, improvised dodging, spontaneous dodging, instant dodging, dodging off the cuff or on the fly, but the bottom line is it's already established that when people say they're winging it they say they're reading the pattern.
