Gameplay

Controls

The game can only be played using a keyboard, and the controls cannot be reconfigured.

Keyboard controls are as follows:

  • The Arrow Keys move Flandre around.
  • Z causes Flandre to fire a short barrage of shots; it may be held down to fire rapidly.
  • X causes Flandre to bomb.
  • Shift activates focused mode; it decreases Flandre's speed, and shows her hitbox.
  • Esc will quit the game under any circumstances. Be very careful when using this button.
  • Ctrl will fast-forward through dialogue, and will also end stages early.

Basic Gameplay

Moedan plays very similarly to all of the Touhou games, with the obvious exception of the fighting and "phantasmagoria" games.

There are 50 stages in the entirety of the game. Each stage is referred to as a "spell card," and introduces certain common danmaku patterns or concepts to allow the player to practice them. Players are entirely free to choose any spell card they would like to practice.

The order of the cards is not based on complexity, but it's not random either; later cards build on earlier cards. Seemingly difficult cards early in the sequence usually have a trick to them that the game describes before the card begins. For example, Spell Card 2 is very complex but is easily beaten by using very small movements to dodge the one aimed bullet, then standing completely still once the final pattern begins.

Players will be awarded either a silver or gold medal for completing a stage, dependent on how they complete it. If a player completes a stage by eliminating all of the enemies, they will be awarded the silver medal. If a player completes a stage by surviving until the timer runs out will be awarded a gold medal; this is because spell cards become increasingly difficult as more time passes by.

Interestingly, unlike most danmaku games, Moedan has no items a player can collect to "power up" or gain more points. Fittingly, there is no point of collection.

For more adventurous players, this game will also allow for the tackling of two spell cards at once. Completing both will result in the awarding of medals to both stages.

Fortunately, danmaku practice is not the only benefit of playing Moedan. There are five unlockable wallpapers (players will already start off with four unlocked); for every ten stages completed in story mode, one wallpaper will be unlocked.

Shot

Flandre's "shot" is the only method of attack in Moedan. There are two available character types a player can choose from; the shot's attack area and behaviour varies depending on the character type the player has chosen.

One character type is the "Linear" firing type, where three streams of bullets are fired directly forward in relation to Flandre's position. This shot type allows for higher damaged in a more focused area, but covers little area.

The other character types is the "Wide" firing type, where one bullet stream will fire forward as the other two streams fire diagonally to the left and right. This shot type allows for more area to be covered by the bullets, but due to its more spread out nature, it deals less damage in a more focused area.

Players should note that there are no power items that could increase the power and effectivity of their shot types. Going into focused mode also does not affect how the shots are fired.

Bomb

Flandre's "bomb" in this game has only one, very basic, purpose, and that is to clear the screen of all bullets. The bomb deals no damage to the enemy, and does not effect the overall score in any way.

A player should remember that in Moedan, if you lose a life, you will not regain or lose any bombs. Also, bombing immediately after you have been hit by an enemy bullet ("reflex bombing") will not save you, and will only result in a bomb being wasted.

Lives

In Moedan, the amount of lives you start off with depends on which spell card you choose. While one stage may have four lives, another may have no extra lives whatsoever.

Flandre's hit box is quite small in comparison to her on-screen sprite; however, it is much larger than any hitbox of any Touhou game. The hitbox can be revealed by entering focused mode.

Players can never regain lives by collecting items or reaching certain scores; Moedan has no items to collect, and scores only serve as a numerical representative of how well a player has done on a spell card. A player can also not continue on any of the spell cards when they lose all of their lives; they will instead be notified that they have failed, and the player will be brought back to the spell card selection menu.

One factor that has caused many players grief is the fact that after you lose a life, the screen will not be cleared of bullets. Instead, Flandre will have a short time of invincibility, which is shown by transparency or flashing of the sprite.

Miscellaneous Notes

  • Backgrounds always consist of clouds over a sky of some color (unlike in the Touhou games, where the backgrounds have a notable variety). However, the color of the background tends to change in relation to the difficulty of the stage. For example, a sky blue background denotes when a stage is basic, while darker colors mean that the stage is going to be more complex.
  • Background music also changes in relation with the difficulty of the stage being played.
  • During dialogue scenes, examples of the bullet patterns you will encounter will be shown in the background (this is quite helpful in many situations). In Touhou, you never see the patterns until you actually start playing the stage.
  • There is no music option available in the main screen. Thus, you cannot really listen to the individual songs of the game's soundtrack without actually playing the game or downloading the soundtrack from the official website.
