Composer's Greeting

Nice to meet(?) you, I'm ZUN. This CD is the
release version of what I announced at Comiket 62.
The songs themselves are songs I wrote a long time ago, so listening to them
now is embarrassing. Most of them are arrangements of songs I wrote
to use in my own shooting games.
I hope you can feel the essence of the arcade game music era from
long, long ago when you listen to them.

In addition, even if you are throwing aside Japan to go overseas,
I truly hope you'll listen to these songs.

Story

This was the new relationship between humans and youkai

1. Legend of Hourai

They say that even the attendants to the Emperor
Qin Shi Huang couldn't find the elixir of life, yet ...
What is Kaguya thinking?

... does she really think we can find things like the Jeweled Branch of Hourai?

2. Dichromatic Lotus Butterfly ~ Red and White

It looks like some strange person has come around again.
I'd better do something before she gets to the shrine ...
Huh, that girl ... doesn't look like a human or a youkai.

3. Lovely Mound of Cherry Blossoms ~ Japanese Flower

I wonder if * is still sleeping under that cherry tree.
The flower petals were once so crimson, but they get paler year by year.
I wonder if there's anything left beneath the soil.

4. Shanghai Alice of Meiji 17

Opium smoke lingers over the town in a cloud, packing its way
into every nook and cranny. I'm in the foreign concession. The people dance a waltz
in clothes of the most brilliant colours. Your magic won't reach me here.

5. Strange Oriental Discourse

"Youkai? You've got to be kidding."
But, I know. That the youkai would live
in peace if the humans would let them.
That youkai are more peaceful and realistic than humans.

6. Enigmatic Doll

Oh, and I wanted to get rid of this doll, too.
But, those blue eyes. Sometimes a black crow carries them
away and eats them. Those are real eyes.
After all, I keep putting in new eyes.

7. Circus Reverie

Alright, next on stage is a bird man.
This bird man was somehow born from the union of a human
and a rare bird of paradise that only lives far to the south.
His parents had died a long time ago, so we took pity on the
poor orphan and brought him into our troupe. Isn't that great?

8. Forest of Dolls

It won't stop raining.
I haven't seen the sun once since I wandered into this house.
I wonder how many days it's been.
The doll wouldn't stop talking to me.
I cut off the doll's head. It looks like the rain has stopped.

9. Witch of Love Potion

No way. I'm not stupid, you know.
My friends would just laugh at me if I told them.
They wouldn't believe they sell a love potion at that store.
So, I broke open my piggy bank without telling anyone.

10. Reincarnation

It's strange that there's a Western-style mansion in the middle of a
deserted forest to begin with. The girl who lived there hardly ever
came into town. But, lately, I've seen a girl who looks like her daughter.
How do I know she had a daughter?
Well, since the girl looks like she did when she was young ...

11. U.N. Owen was Her?

You lack imagination. You can't let yourself get fooled like that.
A criminal with as much imagination as U.N. Owen would probably have
a rope around your neck before breakfast.

12. Eternal Shrine Maiden

Nothing happened at all today.
I was promised nothing at all would happen tomorrow.
Nobody comes here. Not humans, not even gods.
Youkai? Yes, they come everyday.

13. The Strange Everyday Life of the Flying Shrine Maiden

Lately, a lot more people have come by saying ignorant things
about magic and youkai. Such a sad state of affairs.

Story

Our village of honest men originally consisted of only eight people.
We all picked up and moved to a mountain in the east. Two years of,
well, utterly boring daily life passed us by.
One day, one of us found a little hole in a peach tree.
Yes, that was the day we were lost in this paradise.
And right away, I stopped being human.

1. Legend of Hourai

As the most curious one of our group, I hurried straight away into the depths of the forest.
There, I was stopped by a mysterious clown, which seemed to be more than
happy to hand over the Branch of Hourai. The moment I took hold of it, my
body and head separated from each other. I found myself unable to move,
so I was never able to see my friends again.
After that, there were seven honest men left.

2. Dichromatic Lotus Butterfly ~ Red and White

In the morning, I could see a shrine maiden in red and white dancing far above the ground.
As the fastest among our group, I was long entranced by that most vigorous of dances.
Eventually, it began to rain, and by the time I came to my senses,
The shrine maiden had disappeared.

3. Lovely Mound of Cherry Blossoms ~ Japanese Flower

I didn't notice when it stopped raining. The shrine maiden had been soaked completely
through, and it was as if she'd melted away into the rain. As I had been watching her,
the rain had become a veritable storm, and I, the most beautiful one, was taken
captive by the clowns. Just then, the clowns disappeared into the storm,
and I was unable to return to where the others were.
After that, there were six honest men left.

4. Shanghai Alice of Meiji 17

That night, the six men held a foreign-style party. I, the youngest, had
never had sake or opium, so I found it all to be terribly boring.
I secretly snuck away from where the party was, but in the darkness
I was caught by a sinister clown. I was immediately beheaded.
I would never again be capable of even boredom.
After that, there were five honest men left.

5. Strange Oriental Discourse

I ran until I couldn't breathe anymore. Being the coward of the group,
I was so afraid of this paradise. This was only to be expected, but no
matter how far I ran, I couldn't find a way back to our home.
All the people I cared about had disappeared, and I thought I had no more
reason to live, so in my despondence I threw a rope over a branch and hanged myself.
... yet somehow, I'm still conscious. Was the rope too weak? ...
I, the coward of the group, have been reborn. I have nothing to lose,
so why don't I try pretending to be human just once more?

6. Enigmatic Doll

When we awoke, the five of us found ourselves in darkness. If there was one
thing I could say, it was that we seemed to have been captured by mysterious clowns.
The other four were coming up with childish escape plans. As the wisest of the group,
I knew they should stop, but I found myself unable to say anything.
The four carried out their plans as expected, but contrary to my expectations
they were successful. After that, I was never able to escape.
I killed a lot of time alone in an endless darkness; at one point, I sensed a
presence behind me, but I had given up. Something hot prodded into my back.

7. Circus Reverie

Our escape was a great success. We thought we were amazingly clever,
and decided to head back to our new abode in this paradise.
It never occurred to us to distrust any of the others in our group.
We were all honest men. We all got along so well ...

8. Forest of Dolls

This paradise had erected a perfect building to act as our home.
An old-looking, western style building deep within the forest always
happily served us. But there's always a lot of food waiting for us, and
we can only ever go through half of it.
Our group of honest men had fallen to half strength at some point.

9. Witch of Love Potion

Every afternoon, we'd have tea time. And every time I'd
have bitter coffee, but today it seems to be sweeter.
Maybe that's because of the love potion ...
I, the most mature of our group, fell in love with a beautiful
clown, and fell asleep in a state of bliss.
After that, there were three honest men left.

10. Reincarnation

I very clearly saw my friend, who was poisoned. There's no way it was
suicide. After all, I picked out the right coffee and brought it to
everyone's rooms. I didn't tell the other two about his death.
He never ate or drank anything I, the most wary of our group, didn't
prepare myself. I desperately tried to stay awake until they were both asleep.
I entered each of their rooms and locked the doors. Yes, I suspected
a particular one of the two.
The sound of a spike being pounded into a tree rang out from somewhere
close by. Just which of them is doing it? My face contorted in terror in
the darkness. My hands and feet throbbed in pain in time to the sound. It
was just like they were being nailed to something. I thought I should talk
to a medium, but then I realized something.
That's right, I realized I was being nailed to a tree, and I couldn't move.
Just which of the two was doing this to me?
Then, the final nail went through my forehead.
At that moment, I saw the face I expected to see.
All light completely vanished, with no time for me to cry out.

- interlude

You were such an incredible fool.
Don't you understand how stupid the honest men felt?
Don't you think that sharp feeling from long ago has dulled with such a peaceful lifestyle?
Don't you love the bustle of the city, and fortune and prosperity again?
All I wanted was for us all to go back to being a group of thieves and
live an exuberant life, like the old days.
Upon finishing my job, I started preparing breakfast and waited for the dawn.

11. U.N. Owen was Her?

I, the earliest riser of the group, was already on death's door.
There was something in this morning's ham and eggs. I must be pretty
dense for the group to have gotten down to just the two of us without
catching on. It must have all been that person's doing, who killed all
the others in fits of madness.
Well, anyway, it's already too late ...
Seems like I saw a shrine maiden at some point. Was I just imagining it,
Or was her hair really that blonde?
In exchange for my life, it seems that soon only my wish to see that
vision again will be granted.

12. Eternal Shrine Maiden

After that, I, who have been reborn, was assailed by intense drowsiness
yesterday evening. My head felt like it was being split open. I can't remember
anything about yesterday evening, but it feels like I had a long dream. It
would have been even better if I didn't have to face the reality before me ...
What does it all mean? One was poisoned with coffee, one was nailed to a tree,
another went and hanged himself ... I can't believe it.
I got the chair and rope ready, and finally mumbled to myself.
If I died last, then only the coffee poison death could ever have worked.
In other words ... is that how it is?
That must be it.
There must have been something in my dinner.
Oh, whatever, I'm the last one left, I'm all alone.
I don't have any attachments left to such a world full of liars.
This time I tied a good, strong rope to the ceiling and kicked away the chair.
This time, my body didn't fall all the way down to the ground.

And then, there were no honest men left.

13. The Strange Everyday Life of the Flying Shrine Maiden

The shrine maiden of paradise spent a peaceful summer just like every other.
One summer day, this was written in the shrine maiden's diary.

August X
Today's incident started when I met a beautiful blonde girl
walking from the old western-style building deep in the forest.
I feel like I've seen her somewhere before, but I just can't
remember every little detail like that. The girl was just idly
sticking out her tongue and bowing her head and wandering towards
the exit to paradise while laughing loudly. Such an odd girl.
Come to think of it, that girl was the only woman in the eight
honest men, not that it really matters.
Oh, today was just another boring day ...

There are eight less people in this paradise, "Gensokyo", and seven
corpses were kept safe from youkai. Gensokyo has lost these honest
men forever. It's just a change in the population count.
Even this isn't a big piece of news.

Nice to (surely) meet you, I'm ZUN. After a long hiatus I've started doing music again,
and somehow I've gotten around to releasing a music CD. Honestly, the contents aren't
at all forward-looking; it's all retro love. In particular, it's more for people who like
the straight game music from a time so long ago, rather than those who are fond of the
dance-style game music that seems to be popular nowadays. () And, it seems to me to be
quite maiden-esque, so I hope you'll listen if that's your fancy.

From now on, I want to keep creating antique original songs in both the Eastern and Western styles.

Incidentally, there seem to be people who can't feel at ease when they listen to this CD.
This is probably because when things go wrong you can't feel at ease.
Maybe Hourai Ningyou is an "unhealing-type" CD. You might hang yourself.
